About Us

The work we do isn’t always in the spotlight. It happens quietly, under the canopy, where systems take shape and roots run deep. Like the forest’s understory, our work supports and sustains what grows above it — creating the conditions for life, connection, and resilience.

Understory is the evolution of what began as Libertad Farms. We started with soil under our nails and a vision for what community could look like when people and the land are cared for together. Over time, our work expanded. We realized that we could use our skills and experience from our corporate roles to help our community and the land. Our work ranges from designing gardens to feed people and pollinators, building educational programs that spark curiosity, to helping organizations build sustainable frameworks so they can spend more time doing the work they love to do.

OUR MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY

Understory helps you create thriving spaces and programs that are beautiful, functional, and systainable – built with a clear plan for long-term success.

What we do

Garden builds

While community gardens are our biggest projects, we also LOVE helping individuals build their personal gardens. We have built things from just a few raised beds to massive in ground gardens.

Curriculum building

With a strong foundation in program management and nonprofit work, we bring our combined expertise to the heart of our garden curriculum development. Each curriculum is thoughtfully designed to complement our community gardens, providing hands-on, age-appropriate lessons that teach the fundamentals of gardening, sustainability, and nature connection.

The Team

We are the Ramirez Family. We started gardening when our daughter was born and quickly realized it was the perfect way for all of us to connect in nature.

CEO
Christian

Christian is a passionate and motivated educator, finding creative ways to introduce regenerative agriculture to all in his community. Inspired by his military service, where he discovered the power of serving a greater cause, Christian embarked on a journey to steward the land and educate others about the importance of connecting with nature. As a farmer Christian and his family are building a small farm in Driftwood, Texas as a way to bring their community together.

Being a lifetime learner, Christian is a proud graduate of the Fearless Farmers Educators course and the BattleGround to Breaking Ground program through the Texas AgriLife Extension. Driven by a desire to build stronger community bonds, he serves as a platoon leader with The Mission Continues, a nonprofit focused on connecting veterans with under-resourced communities. Through initiatives like building school gardens with local elementary schools, he’s inspiring a love for gardening and nature in young hearts.

Christian envisions a future where communities come together to honor the land and understand the roots of their food. His unwavering passion for regenerative agriculture invites others to join him in creating a more sustainable and connected world.

Head of Marketing
Amanda

Amanda grew up gardening, having grown up in a little food forest without even knowing it. During 2020 she decided to dive back into gardening to find something to get her and Aria through the long days of being stuck in the house. Her little 2×8 garden bed produced not only endless zucchini and tomatoes but sparked a love in gardening for the whole family.

Amanda has her certificate in permaculture design and loves creating spaces that are not only beautiful but give back to the land as well.

Chief chicken officer
Aria

Aria has been helping with the garden since she could walk. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty and is responsible for making sure our soil is healthy and filled with worms. And while chickens are new to us all, she has taken the lead in ensuring the chickens are happy and fed.
